single/double click dilemma

Sometimes defaults are really tough to figure out. Right now we're really going back and forth on whether single click should open things in the Designer navigator (as it always used to) or whether double click should open things (as is the default in Eclipse). We do pay attention (post-beta) to the Eclipse default.

People used to Domino Designer want single click. People used to Eclipse want double click. People who started out used to DD and then started using Eclipse (me, for one!) adjusted to the double click. But we've also had people get blocked thinking there's no way to get a list of forms because single click didn't work.

So the question is... Now that we listen to the Eclipse preference, should that Eclipse preference in a Domino Designer install be set to single click to open or double click to open? And remember that this behavior affects *all* perspectives in the Eclipse instance.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

I'd prefer the eclipse 'double click' default.

I'd prefer double click as the default.

Given all that I've learned about XPages and how I'm likely to be spending more and more time doing eclipse like functionality, its probably worth the effort to get used to doing things the "Eclipse" way whenever possible.

I suspect anything done that isn't in the normal "eclipse" way will eventually come back around to bite us.

I think double-click is the way to go. Andrew is right...it will just give the "see...Notes is different and thus bad" crowd more ammunition.

It's probably not an option to make it a user preference ?

Since there will be so many new things anyway, you should go with Eclipse defaults. Notes designers will have to learn this in any case.

Actually, it *IS* a preference. Maureen's asking -- given that the preference has such broad implications -- what should the default setting for the preference be.

stay with Eclipse behaviour, use doubleclick.

Use Eclipse behaviour...throw out all the past-behaviours you like. :-)

If I can do my tasks with one click less then I vote for it. I have to admit that I often deal with typewriter's cramp (I had to look that up in a dictionary, my arm just hurts). By the way, unread marks in red and not bold without fiddling with hidden notes.css files would be nice too.

It doesn't seem like single click does anything so why do I need to click twice? Already I find myself being caught out waiting for single click to respond. It may be I am a slow learner, but I would suggest that this could become one of a number of changes to the UI behaviour that frustrate some Notes developers.

I'm happy with double-click being the default, but I'll use single-click if the option exists.

Double-click definitely as default. Go with the Eclipse way of doing things.

If this is a preference, then the 'old school' can always change it.

i thought i'd be the minority on this, glad to see it isn't so! i vote double click.

IMO, double click is only necessary when it does something else than single click (like opening instead of selecting). If not, it is simply not needed.
You know how some users double click everything (even links in browsers) out of habit ?

I'm a long time Domino Designer user and I think its time for a fresh start. Go with the Eclipse defaults as far as possible.
